NewVIc students’ business idea wins the People’s Choice Award at The Big Idea Challenge final 2021

NewVIc students have won the people's choice category for four consecutive years after being crowned winners at the 2019 final.

NewVIc had four business students: Byron, Pedro, Dilwar and Prosper with their business idea ‘Fitness Reviver’ that took part in the challenge. The 2021 winners of London Met’s annual Big Idea Challenge were announced at a live online awards night on Thursday 27 May. The four NewVIc students won the people’s choice award in the schools and colleges category.

NewVIc’s ‘Fitness Reviver’ app idea won the people’s vote. The students worked on the idea which has a revolutionary technology that will be able to detect strain, fatigue and impact for a sporting person. Once a breaking point is close, it will show up on an app and say that the athlete cannot continue. In 2019, NewVIc students successfully reached the final stages of the competition and won the Grand Champion award with the business idea – Bracelet Alert – a stylish bracelet that can be used to test for date-rape drugs in your drink.

Business level 3 student and people’s choice award winner Byron, said:

“We felt our idea was a good one to put into practice after discussing it as a team. Due to the pandemic and everything being online, we were not enthused at first, however we had a great mentor from London Metropolitan University and was also linked with an employer. Our employer was a great role model, like us, he started at a young age and took his idea to make it become a great business today. We were surprised with winning the people’s choice. We want to continue to act on our idea and take it into the real market. Watch this space.”

Student Development Manager, Kate Reed added:

“This is fantastic news for NewVIc. Our students took part in one of London’s biggest entrepreneurial competitions for young people and won in a category. Huge congratulations to the four budding entrepreneurs. We are very proud of Byron, Pedro, Dilwar and Prosper! These students clearly highlight that you can do anything as long you put your minds to it. We wish them good luck with their future plans on developing their idea. Well done to everyone involved.”

The Big Idea Challenge for Schools and Colleges has been running for six years, led by London Metropolitan University with involvement and coordination from NewVIc’s Student Development team. London Met’s Big Idea Challenge is an annual pitching competition, open to all students and recent graduates, which seeks to unearth early stage ideas and the passionate individuals behind them. Students are helped to identify business opportunities based on real world problems. It can be any kind of idea. Whether it’s for a business, a social project, a creative endeavor or making the world a better place. They present their ideas in front of their peers and one team from each school is invited to boot camp (online). At bootcamp the teams work with professional mentors to refine their idea and then pitch it to an audience.

The Big Idea Challenge has allowed NewVIc students to develop the ‘future skills’ employers look for including; leadership, resilience, collaboration, creativity and emotional intelligence. Students have gone a step further by developing their skills to become future employers with their own business ideas.
